To the Virginia Association of Rehabilitation Nurses:
In accordance with the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN). Our Mission is to promote and advance professional rehabilitation nursing practice:
Through Education, Advocacy,
Collaboration, and Research
To enhance the quality of life for those affected by disability and chronic illness.
VARN has had a productive summer and is rolling with full steam into fall
The Board has enthusiastically worked toward offering increasing opportunities for our members which has resulted in VARN being awarded the 2016 Local Chapter Award for the Most Creative Outreach to Rehabilitation Nurses in Diverse Settings at the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses Annual Conference in Philadelphia! Congratulations to all as this award represents a growing network of our Virginia Rehab Nurses.
VARN members enjoyed networking in Philadelphia with a social event at Hard Rock Café along with a host of fantastic educational opportunities and plenty of time for FUN! Lots of opportunities for sightseeing and I personally enjoyed the Reading Terminal Market and my first true Philly Cheesesteak. Congratulations to all of our recipients of the Jeanne Gant Memorial Scholarship for 2016: Karen Saunders, Katie McDonnell, Brenda French, Ken Mesick and Susan Wirt.
Time to be planning for the 2017 ARN Education Conference and a trip to
Seattle! VARN will again sponsor grants for members to attend. Applications
will be accepted beginning in the spring and will be posted on our Facebook
page and the website.
A big thank you to Jennifer Bandas for organizing our Fall Conference Mentoring: Taking our nurses from Novice to Expert in Rehabilitation. I would also like to thank Brenda French, Ken Mesick, Susan Wirt, Susan Wolf, Tracy Meyer and Sandy Eyler. The conference was well attended with over 50 nurses attending. Ken did a fantastic job on keeping us well fed and the vendors provided lots of information as well as some time in the massage chair! Lots of networking and time to enjoy time with our fellow rehab nurses was the order of the day, along with knowledge of how to advance professionalism in our profession.
Thank you to Orthopaedic and Spine Center, Sheltering Arms, Hanger, Tidewater PT, Companion Extrodinaire, Powel Prosthetics, Transcend, Comfort Keepers and Optum. Please express your appreciation for their support when you work with these businesses.
Many members expressed interest in electronic payment and registration. The Board has voted to utilize a digital option for payment for our next conference. Be on the lookout for this option when we host our next conference. We hope to host 3 conferences in 2017 including one in the Charlottesville area, Tidewater and Richmond. We will need many volunteers for help with coordination, speakers and vendors. Please assist however you can and reach out to any of the Board members for more information.
